Comparison with other formats
HEIF standard compliant files can utilize High Efficiency Image Coding (HEVC or H.265) encoded media. HEVC doubles the data compression ratio when compared to H.264/MPEG-4 AVC while keeping the same image quality. This gives HEIF files a significant advantage in still images, image sequences, cinemagraphs and computational photography use cases. A more detailed comparison table can be found here.
